Ceramic and porcelain tile are generally non-porous and more resistant to chemicals. Natural stone, on the other hand, is porous and can be easily damaged by acidic or harsh cleaners.
Using the wrong product, especially anything acidic like vinegar or lemon juice, can permanently etch and dull natural stone surfaces.
Step 2: Start with a pH-Neutral Cleaner
For both tile and stone, begin with a pH-neutral cleaner and warm water. This is the safest first approach and often effective for everyday stains.
Spray the cleaner directly onto the stained area.
Allow it to sit for several minutes to break down grime.
Gently scrub with a soft-bristle brush or microfiber cloth.

A poultice is made by mixing a stone-safe cleaning agent with an absorbent material (such as baking soda or a commercial poultice powder) to create a paste. The paste is applied over the stain, covered with plastic wrap, and left in place for 24–48 hours. As it dries, it pulls the stain from the stone. Because this process can be tricky, professional assistance is often recommended for valuable or delicate surfaces.
Step 5: Reseal After Cleaning
If stains have penetrated your grout or natural stone, it may indicate the protective seal has worn off. After deep cleaning, resealing helps prevent future staining by creating a barrier against moisture and spills.
