Many people simply clean the way their parents taught them to clean and use all of the same cleaning supplies their parents did. When it comes to keeping your grout clean, what is your process? Do you use the cleaning supplies that your parents used? Maybe you are not sure how or why to keep your grout clean. Today Silver State Floor Restoration is going to talk to you about how to keep the grout in your home clean.

What is Tile Grout?

First let’s talk about what grout is. Grout is the part of your flooring that is in between the pieces of tile. The grout helps fill in the gaps between the tiles. It helps give a finished look to your flooring. Grout can be purchased in a variety of different color options.

Importance of Cleaning Tile & Grout

You will want to make sure you routinely clean your tile and grout. Sweeping and mopping your floor is the best way to do this. It is extremely helpful to immediately clean spills as well. The less time that spills have to sit on your grout the cleaner your grout will stay. Even if you are frequently cleaning your tile and grout you will still find that your grout needs extra attention sometimes. There are a few different things that you can do to clean your grout. Before you try these tips you will want to sweep and mop your floor.

Cleaning Grout with Vinegar & Water

The first tip that you can try is a 50-50 mix of vinegar and water. Put the mixture into a spray bottle. Spray your grout generously with the mixture. Allow the mixture to sit on your grout for about 5 minutes. Then get a toothbrush or small scrub brush and scrub the grout. Make sure that you do not use a metal brush as it can scratch your tile. Take time to clean the toothbrush out regularly as you clean.

Cleaning Grout with Baking Soda

Our second method requires baking soda and water. Mix two parts baking soda to one part water to make a paste. Apply the mixture to the grout. Allow it to sit on the grout overnight if possible. If you do this you will want to make sure that young children or pets are safe. In the morning you will take a toothbrush or nylon brush and scrub the grout. After you are done clean your tile and grout with warm water to remove any residue from the mixture.
