With a countertop, you can have a wide variety of options that your counter could be. Some of the options are easier to take care of than others. Some are natural stones while some are man-made. But knowing how to take care of them properly can help keep your countertop looking great for many years. Silver State Floor Restoration wants to give you a few cleaning tips on how to take care of your countertops.
Granite
Granite countertops are great for giving your counters that elegant, natural look, plus it is very durable. Granite is very porous. It is also very heavy and very pricey, so if you want granite countertops, you want to commit to taking care of it properly. This way you do not have to replace it or repair it. You first want to make sure that it is sealed properly when you install it. Then you will want to reseal it every 1 to 2 years if it is a lighter granite color and 3 to 5 years if it is a darker color. To ensure that you are taking care of it properly make sure you use soft clothes with regular soap and warm water. Using a harsh or acid cleaner can remove the protective coating your granite has.
Marble
Just like granite, marble is very heavy and expensive. But if you go with marble, you have to be ready to take care of it. Marble can give you that elegant, exotic, expensive look, but just like granite, it is very porous. You will need to re-seal it once a year if not every 6 months because it can easily get scratches, chips, and stains on it. If it is exposed to anything acidic like cleaners, foods, or drinks it can etch the marble and start to ruin the countertop. When you are cleaning your marble countertop, use a soft cloth and use mild dish soap with warm water.
Quartz
If you are looking for a lower-maintenance countertop, then a quartz countertop may be what you are looking for. It is not porous and man-made so it does not require a sealer. The stone is lighter and more flexible so it is less likely to chip or scratch. Yes, it is easier to take care of, but you should still be smart and clean it. Avoid using bleach, acidic or abrasive cleaners. Still uses mild dish soap and a warm wet towel and don’t place hot pots and pans directly on the countertop.
Laminate
Laminate is made of layered particleboard and plastic. With technology improvements laminate has become a higher quality with many colors and patterns. Laminate is more affordable than natural stone and it is easier to clean and maintain. You will not get the natural look with laminate though, but you do not need to seal or reseal the laminate. It is however easy to clean, but with laminate, it can still chip, scratch, and get burn marks from pot and pan.
