Most know they can reach for some bleach and thoroughly scrub the nasty microbe’s buildup when they begin to notice the mold or mildew growth. Bleach is not always the preferred method, but most know it is a common agent that removes the growth of mold and mildew, but quite a few people prefer to stay clear from the toxic chemical, especially those with high sensitivity to it. The good news is that there are several other methods people can try to combat the mold and mildew growth on grout. Professional deep cleaning, however, is the most effective method as professionals have the safe, but toughest products and powerful extraction equipment that can get the mold and mildew below the surface of the grout. Today, we at Silver State Floor Restoration would like to list a few of these alternatives to help you better combat the mold and mildew growing on the grout in your home without the use of bleach.
Cleaning Grout with Vinegar
Vinegar is a natural cleaning agent that is highly-effective, efficient, and versatile, especially when it comes to defeating mold and mildew. Vinegar is naturally acid and is recommended as a preventative aid as well, being that it can help prevent mildew and mold from developing. In a spray bottle, combine equal parts of distilled white vinegar and water; spray it on the surface and let it soak in for about 10 minutes. Scrub with a hard-bristled brush and rinse clean.
Hydrogen Peroxide Grout Cleaner
Hydrogen peroxide is another safe option to clean the grout from mold. A great alternative to bleach is the hydrogen peroxide as there are no harsh effects. Under the right circumstances however, it can potentially cause the grout to lighten, so use with caution. In a spray bottle for easy application, pour some peroxide, spray on the grout’s surface and let the bubbles sizzle for about 10 minutes. Scrub and rinse clean.
Tea Tree Oil for Mold in Grout
A very natural option for removing mold and mildew from grout include tea tree oil. The amount of tea tree oil used is dictated by how much water you need to clean the molded area. For every cup of water, mix one teaspoon of tea tree oil in a spray bottle for a simply administering of the solution. Once applied wait about 15 minutes and use a damp cloth to wipe away the residues.
Grapefruit Seed Extract Cleaner
An expensive option is grapefruit seed extract but is highly effective for cutting through mold. This odorless substance is well worth the expense to some as it naturally kills fungus. Most health food stores keep this in stock. Add 10 drops of grapefruit seed extract, for every cup of water in a squirt bottle. Let it soak in for 15 minutes or so and use a damp cloth to completely wipe it clean.
