If your stone flooring is in a high-traffic area you will notice your floor dulls faster than areas that are not walked on as frequently. Homes that have kids running around on a regular basis will require polishing more often. Your counters can become worn as different food items are prepared on them. Again, how often you use your counter surfaces will determine how often they will need to be polished. The type of stone that you have in your home will also determine how often you will need to polish your floors or counters. Marble is softer and more porous than other stone. Marble tends to scratch and etch easily. If you have marble you will want to make sure that you use cleaners that are appropriate for marble.

DIY VS Natural Stone Polishing

Polishing natural stone can be done on your own or by a professional. Whether you choose to do it yourself or you hire someone you will want to make sure that you use the correct materials for the job. The very first step is to clean dirt and debris from the surface. If you are polishing your floors you will want to remove all of the furniture in the room. Next you will want to mix water and some powder polish to create what is called a slurry. You will carefully apply a thin layer of slurry one area at a time. Then you will buff the slurry away. This is the important part. You will want to make sure that you really take your time on this step. If you do not complete this step properly you will not get the result that you desire. In between polishes you will want to make sure that you clean your floors on a regular basis. You will want to use a soft mop and warm water to clean your natural stone floors. If you use cleaners that are not appropriate for stone you can actually do damage to your floor. You will want to clean up any spills as soon as possible in between mops.
