It’s true that tile flooring is often referred to as the most maintenance free flooring you can have installed in your home. While this is definitely true, there is still a certain amount of maintenance that should be performed to keep it beautiful and the grout clean and stain free. Silver State Floor Restoration is here today to share some thoughts on the importance of sealing your tile, and why you should have it done if you don’t already.
Importance of Sealing Your Tile & Grout
While tile is definitely almost indestructible, there are two different parts to a tile floor. First you have the tiles and then there is the grout that is holding it all together. While tile is very simple to clean, grout….not so much. This is a very porous surface that can stain easily because it simply soaks up everything that spills on it. When it comes to sealing your tile and grout, it isn’t the tile that needs the protection nearly as much as the grout does. This layer of sealant doesn’t allow fluids, foods and other debris to get stuck in the grout. Most of the time, the contractors that install tile flooring don’t end up sealing it, because the grout has to fully cure first. When you have your tile and grout sealed, you will find that cleaning is made much easier as nothing can adhere to the surface and soak in the grout.
When Tile Flooring Should Be Sealed
The whole reason you would have your tile flooring sealed is to arm it against dirt, spills and stains. This doesn’t mean that all tiles will need to be sealed. If you have porcelain or ceramic tile, they don’t need to have a sealant applied to them. Tiles that are slate, travertine, marble or granite will need that added protection. There are always exceptions to the rule though and when you have tile installed, you should refer to the manufacturer as to whether or not it needs to be sealed.
How to Tell if Your Grout is Sealed
If you are wondering whether or not your tile and grout has been sealed, there is an easy way to find this out. All you have to do is pour a small amount of water on top of your grout. If the grout has been sealed, the water will bead up on top of it. If you notice that your grout gets darker and the water disappears, there is nothing between the water and the grout.
