Rust stains can easily develop on grout and even some tile. The rust stains are unsightly blemishes that frequently manifest, though the mildew and mold stains are usually the more common. There are many solutions when it comes to these rust stains, however, the retail products are not only expensive. Unfortunately, they often do not deliver effectiveness, or they are especially harsh chemicals. There are a few household ingredients common in the home that can effectively remove the rust stains from the grout and tile since most would prefer to skip this expense. To help you remove these rust stains, we at Silver State Floor Restoration would like to offer some recommendations.
How to Remove Rust Stains from Grout
At installation, grout and most types of tile should be sealed, and sealed routinely. Because the sealants act as a protective barrier, moisture buildup and staining can be resisted. The sealants wear is accelerated with the use of harsh chemicals. Every year or so, it is important you seal the tile and grout.
Hydrogen Peroxide: Using diluted hydrogen peroxide is a safe option for rust removal. In a spray bottle, blend together well 1 cup water with ½ cup of hydrogen peroxide. With circular patterns to scrub clean with a soft bristled brush or sponge, saturate the stain well and in between applications. Rinse the treated area well with warm water to ensure the mixture and any residual rust is removed after the rust is gone. With this mixture mold and mildew stains can also be effectively and safely removed as well.
Caution – As it is a natural lightening agent, hydrogen peroxide can potentially lighten your grout’s color. Be sure to perform a patch test in an inconspicuous area to ensure the grout’s color is not compromised where this solution is diluted and should not cause any fading effects.
Liquid Dish Detergent: To remove rust stains from grout, a mild liquid dish detergent solution is a safe option. In a squirt bottle, combine 20 drops of mild dish soap and a cup of water. Let it soak in for 5-10 minutes after a liberal application. Scrub the away the rust remnants using a sponge or a soft-bristle brush. With warm water, make certain to thoroughly rinse the soapy residue and rust. Repeat as needed. To maintain your grout, this home remedy can be used for everyday cleaning as well.
Powder Laundry Detergent: Against rust stains on grout, powder laundry detergent is gentle, yet effective. Followed by a sprinkling of a layer of powder laundry detergent, the rust stain needs to be pre-dampened first. For 5-10 minutes, allow the detergent to loosen the rust. Immediately follow up with warm water to rinse the area clean, use circular scrubbing patterns with a sponge or a soft-bristle brush to scrub away the rust.
