In order for you to preserve the long lasting beauty of your natural stone, Silver State Floor Restoration would like to offer the following simple tips:
Care Tips for Natural Stone Countertops:
Trivets: While many stones can withstand heat, the use of trivets or mats is recommended.
Coasters: Always use coasters under glasses, especially if they contain citrus juices or alcohol.
Spills: In the case of a spill, use a microfiber towel to immediately blot up as much of the spill as you can, working from the outside in. Be careful not to wipe as this will just spread the spill. Please see our previous blogs on stain removal techniques and products.
Cleaning: You will see lots of natural stone cleaning products on the market such as granite countertop cleaners. Please be aware though that an excessive concentration of cleaner or soap may leave an unsightly film and cause streaks. Also, products containing lemon, vinegar or other acids may dull or etch calcareous natural stones (for example marble, travertine and limestone). Scouring powders, creams and pads often contain abrasives that may scratch certain natural stones.
Natural Stone Floor Cleaning Tips
Dust Mopping: Dust mop interior floors frequently using a clean non-treated microfiber (or other soft cloth) dry dust mop. Sand, dirt and grit are abrasive and can damage your natural stone floor.
Squeegee: In the bath and shower areas, using a squeegee after each use can minimize soap scum.
Entrance Mats: Mats and area rugs both inside and outside an entrance will help to minimize the dirt, sand and grit that can scratch your stone floors. Ensure that the underside of the mat or rug is a slip resistant surface and one that also allows the natural stone to breathe.
Vacuum cleaners: If you are going to run a vacuum cleaner over your stone floors, at least be sure the metal or plastic attachments and the wheels are not worn as these vacuum parts can scratch the surface of most natural stones.
Spills: Blot the spill with a micro fiber towel immediately working from the outer edges to the center of the spill. It is important to not broadly wipe the area as this will just spread the spill. We have published some great stain removal articles. Please see out blog page for more information.
