Travertine tile requires various daily and weekly cleaning and maintenance. On a daily you should use a soft bristle broom to clear away the dirt and other sediments that fall on it. By doing this you can reduce the ground in dirt you would find over time. Many other items like food and drink spills can cause staining or other types of damage. All spills should be cleaned as soon as possible. On a weekly, wipe down the floor with a clean damp mop, removing the particles missed with the broom. The mop will remove the spills you may have overlooked.
Travertine Monthly Disinfecting & Deep Cleaning
To disinfect travertine tile, use a mild cleaning agent that is soap free cleanser this is specifically used on natural stone and travertine. A few drops of mild liquid dish soap, mixed with warm water is another alternative. Using your preferred cleaning product apply to a soft mop or a wet vacuum. Reminder to sweep the floor before mopping to prevent unnecessary damage to the flooring. After mopping, if the floor looks like it has a film over it you can mop the floor with fresh water to remove the film. Your grout should also be cleaned. If you have heavy traffic on your flooring, you will want to clean more frequently less traffic every couple of months. With travertine tile flooring you will want to make a paste using water and baking soda. Scrub the grout with a soft bristle brush, then rinse the grout with clean water. Do not use bleach-based cleaning agent on travertine tile flooring as this will damage the tile.
Stone Floor Sealant Should Be Applied Periodically
Travertine file has a smooth surface that appears to be non-porous, it contains many microscopic pores. These pores will collect dirt particles, liquids from spills and other elements. More dirt collects in the pores over time the floor will look increasingly dirty and discolored. Mold growth can be a concern. The best way to reduce this concern is to seal the floor periodically. Two types of sealants should be used. First apply a sealant that will penetrate the pores to prevent moisture saturation. Second is a topcoat applied to protect the surface of the travertine tile to prevent stains. These two sealants should be applied every few years.
