Grout, which a cement-based mixture, is designed to fill the space between stone, glass, and ceramic tiles. With an assortment of colors and a few formulas to choose from, grout helps secure the tile in a stylish and practical way. As tile and grout is a common option to cover floors in kitchens and bathrooms, it is also used as backsplashes and around showers and tubs. With so many stylish and creative options, tile and grout is used in many different ways. Unfortunately, many struggle to keep the grout clean and preventing the dull, dingy effects that seem to occur over time. We at Silver State Floor Restoration would like to relate why it is a challenge to clean and some preventative measures.
Mistakes Made with Mopping Floors
Soil, bacteria, soap scum, moisture, and other particulates are commonly absorbed in grout as it is very porous in nature. Mold and mildew can quickly set into the grout under these conditions. When cleaning these surfaces, most people turn to the mop for the floors and rag/sponge for other surfaces. But despite the efforts made diligently, the grout still seems to lose the bright, clean, freshness it originally had. One of the primary causes is that when mopping, people will use the same prepared bucket of water and cleaner throughout the entire process. As you dip the mop in the water, the dirt and debris muds up the water, making it less and less effective as you. Eventually, you are only applying filthy surface water to the top. Also, few take the time to rinse and dry after the washing, leaving a residue of cleaner behind and moisture to set into the grout. The residing cleaner will buildup, adding layers of residue and dust and debris that magnetizes to it. Over time, the dingy and dull effects set into the grout. If mopping is your primary approach to cleaning your tile and grout, every second or third washing, only use warm water to rinse the residues and wipe away the spots to avoid the buildup. When cleaning the floors, stay away from vinegar, as it will expedite the wear of the sealant.
Grout is Lower than Tile
Because grout dips lower than tile, it makes little to contact as you scrub, leaving these grout lines exceptionally difficult to clean. The best method to treating the grout is scrub with a brush, but the time and labor isn’t appealing. Use a using a tile and grout machine cleaner to maximize your cleaning efforts. If you stick to the mopping, make sure you change the water frequently and you use a scrubbing brush to treat the grout.
Importance of Sealing Grout
To extend the clean and freshness of your grout, ensure they are periodically serviced with a professional sealant application. The sealer acts a barrier to reduce the moisture, soil, and debris from seeping deep into the grout and help minimize staining. Keep in mind that on average, sealers last about a year, but can wear down faster with excessive foot traffic and frequent cleanings, especially if the wrong cleaners are used. Lack of sealer will also be a contributing factor to keeping the grout clean.
